Scope and purpose
JMAR Editorial Assistant is a free plugin published by Menachem Jacobs. It helps editors review manuscripts for the Jewish Medical Ethics Annual Review (JMAR), including submission compliance, halachic literature coverage, citation issues, and proposed revisions.
In JMAR’s intended workflow, the journal has already received a manuscript before an authorized editor provides it to the assistant within ChatGPT. The plugin is an editorial support tool, not the journal’s submission system. This policy describes the plugin; it does not replace the journal’s policies for receiving, retaining, reviewing, or publishing submissions.
Information used in a review
Users may provide manuscript text, footnotes, references, author details, editorial questions, and review instructions through ChatGPT. The assistant uses the information provided to generate editorial feedback. Manuscripts may contain unpublished work or confidential information. Provide only material you are authorized to process through this service, and remove patient-identifying details and unnecessary sensitive information before uploading.
JMAR’s author permissions cover GPT-assisted editorial review of submitted manuscripts. Editors should use manuscripts within the scope of those permissions and follow the journal’s confidentiality procedures. Other users must independently ensure they have permission to provide their content through ChatGPT.
Plugin access, collection, and sharing
The current plugin supplies instructions for use within ChatGPT. It has no separate server, manuscript database, payment system, or tools that automatically transmit a manuscript to Menachem Jacobs or JMAR. Using the plugin does not automatically submit a manuscript to the journal or make it public. Publishing the plugin does not publish the manuscripts reviewed with it.
The publisher does not receive manuscript content through a plugin-operated endpoint in this version. If you independently send manuscript content or review results to the publisher or journal, that is a separate disclosure. Users remain responsible for any sharing of conversations, files, or review results.
ChatGPT processing and retention
Content provided through ChatGPT is processed through OpenAI’s services. Applicable handling, retention, data controls, and access depend on the service, account or workspace, settings, and governing terms. This plugin policy does not promise a particular OpenAI retention period, training exclusion, or confidentiality arrangement.
For information about OpenAI’s practices and available controls, consult its Privacy Policy and the settings and policies applicable to your account. The plugin itself does not provide independent controls to delete content held by OpenAI or in JMAR’s editorial systems.
Support correspondence
If you contact the publisher directly, your message may include your contact details and information you choose to provide. Avoid sending confidential manuscripts or patient information in a support request unless an appropriate method and authorization have been established.
Support emails are retained for up to 12 months after the issue is resolved, unless an ongoing matter requires longer. This period applies to support correspondence, not to manuscripts held by JMAR or content held by OpenAI. Contact the support/privacy address below with questions about your correspondence or to request deletion.
Questions and requests
For plugin support or privacy questions, contact thejmesociety@gmail.com. Questions about a journal submission should be directed to JMAR through its editorial contact process. Requests concerning ChatGPT-held information should use the applicable OpenAI account controls or privacy request channels.
Changes
Any revised policy will be published with an updated effective date. The policy will be reviewed before introducing new functionality that changes data handling.
